Week 4 tute 10 -12
I’ve been trying to formulate a topic for the essay. Thus far if I was asked how searching the library has guided me, I would respond that it has frustrated and thwarted my every attempt to come up with a topic. I have decided I want to do something on the social impact of new comm technologies. I want to illuminate not only the positivities but indeed the negativities and their affects upon society. Perhaps iI will hit it from a religious angle, I'm yet to decide. Anyway , I have been searching for resources in the library and, as per tutorial instructions, stumbled upon 3 academic articles related to my topic.
1. Online Communication: Linking Technology, Identity, & Culture - its about how tech changes have changed how people communicate. IT focuses on how computer-mediated communication seems to blur the line between immediate communication and mediated communication.
Futhermore it examines how individuals come to create their online identities and how they use these identities to communicate in a variety of relationships online. These include romantic relationships, work relationships, online therapy relationships, and virtual community relationships
2. the next article titled Are We Disconnected?, is about how many people believe technology enhances their lives. It presents a debate on whether today's technology is isolating people from each other.
3.The third article is titled The Technological Fix: How People Use Technology to Create and Solve Problems. The title is basically what it is about.

1. What is a search engine?
Search engines maintain databases of web sites and use programs (often referred to as "spiders" or "robots") to collect information, which is then indexed by the search engine.
2. How do search engines rank the stuff they find on the internet?
Search engine ranking is a measure of the online promotional success of a web page or website.
3. My favourite search engines are Google and Yahoo. I use these because of the popularity and the fact that the satisfy my needs. I don't really know if other engines offer anything that these two don't.
4. There is a lot of action that is performed by Google. For example their acquisition of You Tube a while ago (which is being sued by Viacom). Recently microsoft was in the news for faulting google on its copyright protection practices.

Hello y'all,
From broadcast to narrowcast eh???
New communication technologies have blended into, well, life as we know it. Such a reliance exists that if it were suddenly removed from existence businesses would crumble, economies would crash and there would be a lot of desperate people devastated over the loss of their myspace page.
I probably haven't used the postal service in quite a while. And lets face it, I'm not the type of guy who has the attention span to write a 3 page letter nor the handwritting (I have the penmanship of a drunk 4 year old with no fingers). The advent of E-mailing brought with it speed, low cost and efficiency, and nice writing. With a majority of my family overseas, its probably my most used form of communication to them.
Sharing information between my friends, you know, like uni stuff or files, is probably what i use communication technologies for the most. I got the bluetooth going on, i'm using the usb key, the mp3 player is being used as a transfer device, and i'm talking to them on the 3G phone. I'm not using the video calling though. My mobile phone is the handiest thing i own but in the same breath i can say i miss the days when i never had one. Sometimes you just wanna detach for the world, be left alone. With all the new com technologies its pretty hard to do... or at least its pretty hard to make up an excuse as to why you can't be found. I dislike sms. I'd rather call and tell the person in a clear statement than have them interpret the artifical semantics of a 60 character message.
Yeah life has changed for me in the last twelve years. The internet came about and opened up a world of information and opportunites. I threw away the encyclopedias and burnt the dictionary. I find it harder to read a book than to read a screen. I use skype to call overseas and talk to my friends more nowadays than ever due to msn messenger. Actually thats probably how i communicate with my friends the most in a non face to face capacity. I guess i just caught on to the trend. Thats the thing with all of these technologies. You are basically forced to use them to survive. Adapt, deal with the new communication rules or die. I guess there wont be any stopping the juggernaut that is new communication technology.

I would say hello but I will just get the narrator to say it in french...
This week the lecture outlined the dropping of an evolutionary bomb that resulted in the development of the commodity known as media. The lecture expressed the development of numerous views, movements, thought patterns that evolved since the early 1900's. As with much theoretical knowledge and the related points of view, that which is expressed is neither deemed correct or incorrect but blended to be presented in an eclectic form...
The lecture expressed this electic form to be that of Political economy. Now after listening to the lecture and reading the lecture notes, I was failing to see the overall grandure of what was being expressed. It was not until reading the text book that I fully understood the implications that the progressive 1900's had and what importance political economy has.
The importance (in my humble opinion) is not merely accomodation or powersharing as stated. It's importance and true power is found within the relationship between the constitutional elements and the resultant effects upon its primary reciepients of its existence, that being the people within society. Media is a commodity, however in the same vain so are people. How we think, act, interact as a society is defined by communication and media. The size and development of communication and media is defined by society, eg, technology fetishism, search for ease and simplicity of tasks. In this view the actual purpose of the theorism of political economy can be found. This is even more true if we truly are under the influence of Hypercapitalism.
With a twist that could rival other films with twists, La Jetee is set post world war 3. Dude goes back in time, meets a chick, forward in time, back in time, gets rejected, spoken to by the future, back in time, and sees himself geting shot... confusing would be a term used to describe my very unflattering description. Actually the film is very clever and effective... but takes a bit of thought to understand the "artiness". My explanation is... damn I'm over the word limit.... don't you hate that.

week 1 tutorial 10 - 12 David Boyd
Sitting in the first tutorial for the first year subject called 'new communications technologies'. I have been here for a while now, so hearing the welcome to university speech is pretty cute and funny. The tutor was pretty good at it though... a lot gentler speech than the one i received all those years ago... 'welcome, you are at university now, let's begin'. You know, a little time to say 'don't worry, we are here to help', goes a long way...
In all honesty, I had the attitude that normally accompanies taking a course as an elective (translation: This has nothing to do with the Psychology theme i signed up for...but for some reason they are making me do an elective.) However, after hearing the spiel that Chris gave, I can see that the course does hold some relevance to what I may or want to end up doing.
All the people surrounding me are mainly straight out of school. A majority of them are "expert" bloggers, spending much of their spare time attached to their my space page. I know what it is, I understand the concept and process, but I have never really had the time nor even the want to maintain a blog. I guess you could say that I'm not much of a sharing type of guy...
Missing the first lecture probably wasn't the most advantageous beginning to this subject. I guess, I'll do the usual and play catch up. The sad thing is I'm getting pretty good at it. The text book is my friend... we have spent many late nights bailing me out of trouble due to nonattendance. Yes, I'll make a change. It's just that stuff happens.
